California woman victim of rare predatory grizzly attack

Early on July 6, 2021, Leah Davis Lokan, 65, of Chico, was mauled after being dragged out of her tent.

The grizzly was what is referred to as a "food-conditioned" bear, meaning it had developed the ability to seek out human food.

Along the banks of the Blackfoot River, which was made well-known by the film "A River Runs Through It," it attacked Lokan.

A 417-pound male grizzly bear broke her neck and severed her spine, according to an autopsy.

Three days after mauling Lokan, the bear was killed while breaking into a chicken coop close to Ovando.

The same grizzly bear that raided another coop hours after the mauling was identified by DNA tests.

Wildlife officials advise campers to take cover in a building or vehicle if a grizzly bear approaches a tent that is occupied.
